Professor Salom’s extensive background in both public and private health has endowed her with a wealth of experience collaborating with government entities at all levels. With over 25 years of expertise in health, spanning roles as an academic, pathologist, researcher, and health manager across various locations in Australia, she most recently served as the Director of Pathology at Monash University.
During her tenure, Professor Salom played a pivotal role in establishing the single state pathology service, skillfully bringing together over 1800 staff members from 17 hospitals. She was also instrumental in spearheading significant research initiatives, notably the establishment of the Centre of Cancer Biology. Her qualifications include being a Registered Medical Specialist (MB BS, FRCPA), with additional management qualifications (MBA, AFCHSM, FAICD), and research qualifications (MD, BMedSci). Professor Salom holds the distinguished title of Professor at Monash University, from where she graduated.
Following her medical studies, Professor Salom pursued her MD at the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Monash University and conducted research at Hammersmith Hospital London. She later specialized in Surgical Pathology and obtained an MBA, leading her to venture into hospital and pathology management. Notably, she served as the Inaugural Executive Director of SA Pathology from 2008 to 2012. During this period, SA Pathology grew into a comprehensive service providing pathology testing, clinical services, and substantial research, operating on a budget exceeding $280M.
In addition to her academic and managerial roles, Professor Salom has been actively involved in various health-related projects as the Director of National Health Advisory at KPMG, aimed at enhancing value for clients in both public and private healthcare organizations.
Her contributions also extend to governance roles, as a Non-Executive Director at Melbourne Health, where she served on the Board, Clinical Governance and Improvement Committee, Audit Committee, and held a standing position on the Finance and Primary Health committees. Moreover, she acted as a Non-Executive Director at Peninsula Health, holding positions on the Board, Human Ethics Committee, Planning Committee, and Quality and Safety Committee.
Furthermore, Professor Salom has demonstrated her capabilities in running a diverse Health business as the Managing Director of Medvet Pty Ltd, where she reported to the Board and took charge of its operations.
